Overview

Arenal Volcano Hike

Walk through a landscape transformed by the forces of nature and discover the history of Arenal Volcano along its trails, volcanic formations, and tropical forest.

The Arenal Volcano Hike lets you explore one of Costa Rica’s most iconic natural settings while your guide helps you interpret the marks volcanic activity has left on the landscape. Along the way, the forest, ancient lava flows, and views of the volcano tell different chapters of Arenal’s story.

For decades, Arenal was one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes. Its major eruption in 1968 profoundly transformed this region and ushered in a period of activity that lasted for years. Today, walking around the volcano lets you see how vegetation has gradually reclaimed areas once altered by lava and other volcanic materials.

Accompanied by a naturalist guide, you’ll learn more about Arenal’s geology, the evolution of the landscape, and the tropical forest that now surrounds the volcano. During the hike, you may also encounter birds, reptiles, mammals, and other wildlife, although each encounter depends entirely on nature.

On clear days, different points along the route may offer views of Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal, creating special opportunities to stop, take in the scenery, and take photographs.

This experience combines nature, geology, and history in a hike that helps you understand that Arenal is much more than the silhouette of a volcano: it is a landscape that continues to change over time.
